THE VILLAGE OF VOUNI
Winemaking is deeply rooted in the Cypriot culture and there are a number of villages that have been growing vines for centuries. The village of Vouni, which is located on the southern foothills of the Troodos Mountains, in the Limassol region, is one of Cyprus’s most active winemaking villages.
The village’s long association with viticulture, done the traditional way, has led to it being selected as the location of the first ever ‘Wine Sommelier School’ in Cyprus.Â
AN ACADEMIC PATHWAY
The Cyprus University of Technology has recently signed a co-operation agreement with the village to create an academic pathway for people to become certified wine sommeliers in Cyprus. The agreement is a crucial component of the university’s strategy to improve their reachÂ
to remote areas of the country. It is hoped that the Sommelier School will become pivotal for both the university and the Vouni community. The main consensus is that the partnership will also contribute to sustainable winemaking and help the development of viticulture in the entire area surrounding Vouni. This agreement is also thought to be crucial to modernising some production methods, while preserving age-old customs and traditions of Cypriot winemaking.
AGRO-TOURISM
It is hoped that the introduction of the school will strengthen the bond between the academic realm and the local community. The main aim is to create an environment that will allow education to integrate with local culture. Courses at the school will run for two years and result in an international recognised wine sommelier
accreditation. The Sommelier School will also create new opportunities, which should elevate the quality of life and boost the economic resources for viticulture and agro-tourism in the area.
THE WINE SOMMELIER SCHOOL
The inception of a dedicated Wine Sommelier School in Cyprus is thought to have been the brainchild of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities of Cyprus. Other Wine Sommelier schools operate on the island, but this will be the first educational programme that will offer a recognised formal qualification for viticulture, whist pursuing a hands on career in the field.
