CANARY BLACK (15)
This film contains action, thematic and mild scenes with some mild language.

A somewhat more serious comic book caper to savour, with Avery Graves, codenamed Canary Black, following a predictable but interesting plot to save her husband from kidnappers. The CIA operative becomes isolated when she is branded a traitor and is betrayed and hunted by everyone she once trusted. This forms the main part of the plot that creates several interesting subplots, twists and turns that keep the audience engaged throughout the film. The character’s sheer determination and willingness to do whatever it takes to save her husband from international terrorists cuts through well enhancing the character and supporting the plot very well. Canary Black’s lonely journey through the dark underworld is another facet of the film that is done very well, portrayed by the cinematics in true comic book fashion. This predictable but entertaining film certainly delivers to fans of action movies and sets itself up nicely for a sequel that I am sure will follow soon.

Genre: Action, Drama
Director: Pierre Morel
Duration: 101 minutes
Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Saffron Burrows, Rupert Friend.

Recommendation Score 8/10 – This very interesting story of the former President’s early life and aptly begins in the 1970’s, taking the audience on a Donald Trump styled rollercoaster ride all the away through to the 1980’s. the film successfully portrays the intricate and often problematic details faced by the main protagonist when he started his real-estate business in 1970’s New York, and goes on to examine the relationaship between the eager, but raw second son of a wealthy family, and the hardened unscrupulous attorney Roy Cohn, who takes the fledgling Trump firmly under his wing. The film uses a clever approach to both characters and although it follows a predictable rise to power format, it remains compelling enough to continually engage viewers. The film also portrays how Cohn’s stern personality is at times deeply tested against Trumps general ‘gung ho’ attitude, but aspects of their loyalty and respect for each other as well as how their overall relationaship develops, not only entertains but shows an unexpected softer side to the often arrogant Trump. However, Cohn’s guidance is still portrayed as eventually helping to create the Donald Trump we know and some love today.

DESPICABLE ME 4 (K-Family)
This film contains thematic and mild criminal elements.

Gru welcomes long lost Gru junior to the fold and wants to live happily ever after, but the new member to the family is intent on tormenting his father. Gru tries to deal with the new arrival in the best way he can, but then things take a turn for the worse when a new nemesis challenges Gru. Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina prove to be formidable adversaries, and the Gru family is forced to go on the run.

Genre: Family, Animation, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Adventure
Director: Chris Renaud Patrick Delage
Runtime: 110 Minutes
Cast: Sofía Vergara, Joey King, Steve Carell

Recommendation Score 7/10 – Gru and the gang return for one more adventure in the popular animated comedy franchise. Gru and his minions take on another crazy and often wild outdoor adventure, offering an old-fashioned, feel good plot that serves its audience well. Full of wacky adventure and slapstick comedy, this latest installment looks and feels great and all children will enjoy watching this big-hearted animation, and ofcourse the hilarious minions steal the show once again.

BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE (PG 13)
This film contains extreme comic violence, suggestive material, strong language and some crude action.

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious portal to the Afterlife in the attic and accidentally opens it. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Genre: Fantasy, Comedy, Mystery, Horror
Director: Tim Burton
Runtime: 104 Minutes
Cast: Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux

Recommendation Score 7/10 – A pleasingly idiosyncratic sequel to the original film which was released back in 1988. The film portrays death in a more positive light and the loveble rogue of mischief Beetljuice is once again called upon to restore balance. The master of mayhem once again pulls out all the stops, creating film that is both hilariously offbeat and visually captivating. This film, with its endless wit and dark humour does well with the genuine anti hero element and the audience will find themselves feverishly waiting for the devious poltergeist’s next gag.

JOKER Folie a Deux (18)
This film contains sequences of violence and stark comedic horror.

Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while in Arkham State Hospital. An unscrupulous release from the institution sees the pair embark on a doomed romantic misadventure of mayhem and destruction across the whole of Gotham City.

Genre: Action, Thriller, Horror, Science Fiction
Director: Todd Phillips
Runtime:  138 Minutes
Cast: Joachim Phoenix,
Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener

Recommendation Score 7/10 – The second installment of this film takes the anti-hero Joker one step further down his spiralling path of mayhem and destruction. This film will constantly unseat fans of action, horror, and science fiction and follows the same winning formula of the previous film. The chemistry between the lead roles creates an obvious sub-plot that fits in nicely amongst the inpending turmoil and fans of the previous film will not be disappointed. The film is led by a simple, but entertaining script that intricantly follows in a sense a tragic love story, whilst shifting between the obvious, but entertaining caviates of both action and horror. This film is definitely worth a watch for all comic culture fans!

VENOM: THE LAST DANCE (12)
This film contains thematic and mild action elements.

Hunted by humans and aliens, Venom and Eddie are on the run. With the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will change everything culminating in their last dance.

Genre: Action, Thriller, Fantasy, Adventure,
Director:
Cast: Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, Megan Mullally
Duration: 109 Minutes

Recommendation Score 8/10 – The final instalment of the Venom and Eddie saga sees the chips firmly stacked against the dynamic duo. Venom and Eddie find themselves completely alone and no longer in San Francisco. Annie and Dan are not with them any more and they are being ruthlessly hunted down by both worlds. This scenario sets the film up nicely for a new adventure and creates an interesting Venom and Eddie versus the world scenario that allows both characters to play off each other once again in an exciting and often comedic way. If this wasn’t enough, the film features Knull, quite possibly the worst Symbiote villain ever, who joins the hunt with a new zeal. Venom pledges to Eddie that he is with him until the end, and this loyalty is portrayed throughout the film, offering a softer side to the character that is quite endearing. Another great aspect of this film is the introduction of some interesting new symbiotes working together that help create a really good build up to a fantastic fight scene at the end. This film is a must for fans of the previous two and a great watch for all fans comic books!
