The majority of these unique grape varieties have been reared on the island for centuries, and as a result, the island of love boasts a thriving wine industry that is rapidly gaining international recognition. The Cyorus wine industry offers a good range of crisp whites, all the way up to some bold full-bodied reds, and as well as the rugged foothills of the Troodos Mountains and beyond, the sunny slopes of the wine-growing regions of Paphos and in particular Limassol, continue to innovate the viticulture movement on the island to this day, growing several grape varieties and producing a wide range of quality wines. The main two indeginous grape varieties on the island are ‘Maratheftiko’, which is mainly used to produce red wines and ‘Xynestyri’, which is mainly used produce white wine. A combination of both is used to create ‘Commandaria’, the infamous Cyprus dessert wine, and they are often merged with other main stream grape varieties continually experimenting and innovating to create more varieties of good quality wines.
