WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?
Although padel tennis has traditionally dominated the local racket-sport scene, Pickleball is now rapidly experiencing steady growth in popularity across Cyprus. Invented in the United States in 1965, the fun, fast-paced, inclusive racket sport has gradually gained traction, and as the official sport of Washington State, the game that combines elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton is now played throughout the world. Its popularity is further compounded by the fact that it can be played both indoors and outdoors, and in a singles or doubles format. Pickleball generally utilises a badminton-sized court and participants use short-handled bats to hit a perforated plastic ball over a modified net.
PLAYING PICKLEBALL IN CYPRUS
Although relatively new to Cyprus, pickleball is also gaining popularity in all corners of the island. Several indoor expat meetups have made the sport central to their activities across Cyprus, and in light of this, they provide the perfect opportunity to learn the game and enjoy the sport. New dedicated courts in public parks, hybrid padel/pickleball clubs, sports clubs, community centres, hotels, and recreational facilities at resorts have opened their doors to the sport. People of all ages and skill levels across the island are coming together to play and enjoy the game regularly, and several outdoor plexipave courts can now easily be booked on the day to play the sport. Pickleball also offers a great opportunity to not only stay active but to meet new like-minded players of the sport. New clubs and groups, particularly in Limassol and Paphos, are regularly holding Pickleball tournaments and events throughout the year.
