EXTREME HEAT EVERY AUGUST IN CYPRUS
The meteorological service issues red alerts for heat-induced weather every August in Cyprus. Inland temperatures often hit +45°C at this time, and although most people enjoy the weather, others frequently struggle through the heat.
DAILY HEAT MANAGEMENT
For some, surviving the August heat requires proactive planning, as well as immediate action. Adjusting schedules like running errands, exercising, or walking pets during the cooler hours of the early morning or late evening may also be necessary.
Protecting Exposed Skin: Use SPF 30+ sunscreen at least 15 minutes before heading outside. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses is also advisable. Wearing light, loose-fitting cotton or linen clothing may also help.
Utilise Cool Water: Take regular cool showers throughout the day to alleviate heat.
Cooling the Living Space: Keeping a spray bottle of water in the fridge can be used as a misting device throughout the day. Place a bowl of ice or frozen water bottles directly in front of an electric fan to circulate chilled air.
Optimise airflow: Opening windows at night will create a cross-breeze and utilise the outside temperature drop during the night.
Water-rich Foods: Snack on fruits and veggies like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and celery to stay hydrated and nourished throughout the day. Sipping water consistently throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty, is also advised.
Avoid Dehydrators: Pre-hydrate with plenty of water and electrolytes before going outside. Limit caffeine intake, alcohol, and sugary drinks, as they actively deplete the body’s water supply.
Recognising Heat Exhaustion: If you are spending time outdoors or in a hot environment, watch out for warning signs like dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or a throbbing headache. If symptoms occur, immediately move to a cool or air-conditioned space. Placing cold packs on pulse points may also alleviate symptoms.
