Meet the Greek Cypriots

A look at the characteristics and culture of the people of Cyprus

A MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE

Cypriots have a true Mediterranean lifestyle in their veins, and this makes them truly one of a kind.  With their heart-warming, welcoming nature and their genuine hospitality, which seems to come to them naturally, Cypriots make Cyprus a truly special place. Most who visit the island often agree and they regard Cypriots as genuinely special, often returning year after year.

Visiting Cyprus

Why are Greek Cypriots so unique?

Warm & welcoming

Visitors are often surprised by how friendly Greek Cypriots actually are. The sense of hospitality is deeply ingrained in Cypriot culture, which dictates that offering hospitality to all guests is an honour. This trait is firmly adhered to throughout the island, and it is not uncommon for strangers to greet you with a smile or even invite you into their homes for refreshments. They are also on hand to help with any distress that may occur, and it is not uncommon for Cypriots to offer you a lift in their car.

Family-oriented

One of the most notable things about Cypriots is their distinctive hospitality. This is because family is firmly at the heart of Cypriot society. Families in Cyprus are typically very close, and it’s common for several generations to live under one roof or nearby. Family gatherings are frequent and often involve large meals where everyone comes together to share food and their recent stories. This strong family bond often extends to their sense of community as well, which makes Cyprus feel like one big, genuine, welcoming family. In light of this,

Relaxed & easy-going

Cypriots are known for their laid-back attitude towards life. The pace of life on the island is slower than in many other parts of Europe. Cypriots often take things in their stride, and this relaxed mentality is often seen as the perfect work-life balance. To most Cypriots, spending time with family and friends is more important than any work commitments.

A proud history

Cypriots are extremely proud of their rich past and history. The strategic location of the island  has made it a crossroads for several civilisations for thousands of years. This is evidenced by the variety of archaeological sites that are located around the island. The island commemorates their unique history that includes ancient ruins, Byzantine churches, Venetian fortresses, and several examples of Ottoman architecture while looking forward to the future.

A Love of food

This is an important component of Cypriot culture, and most Cypriots love to gather around a table to enjoy several delicious Cypriot specialities. It can be said that each mealtime in Cyprus is often a celebration in itself, and sharing food is a way of showing love and establishing relationships. With a focus on fresh ingredients, OLIVE OIL, and lots of meat and vegetables, the Mediterranean diet is central to their lifestyle. Traditional Cypriot cuisine includes several LOCAL DELICACIES.

Multicultural & bilingual

Cyprus has a unique position as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. This has given it a multicultural flair. Although Greek is the official language, English is widely spoken, especially in the business and tourism sectors. The fact that most Cypriots can speak in more than one language makes them even more hospitable when making visitors feel welcomed.

Resilience & adaptability

Throughout history, Cypriots have faced numerous challenges. These have stemmed from several natural disasters to severe political conflicts. Despite this, they have shown incredible resilience and adaptability. Their ability to maintain a positive outlook and move forward when things are uncertain is truly inspiring.

Strongly established traditions

Despite modern influences, Cypriots often preserve their traditions and culture. Festivals and celebrations of religion have significance in their daily lives. The colourful Carnival of Limassol, the traditional Easter celebrations, along with the annual grape harvest festivals, are all celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm. Traditional music and dance are highly valued and are often featured in these celebrations.
