HOW TO PREPARE FOR CYPRUS WILDFIRES

With the climate in Cyprus becoming increasingly dry, the whole island is now more susceptible to wildfires. Known to start in rural areas, these fires quickly spread out of control from flying embers. With this in mind, there are series of measures that can be taken to protect homes and be ready if a fire occurs.

  • Creating clear space: The area surrounding each house should be clear of any natural debris or combustible materials.
  • Roof maintenance: Each roof should be clear of any natural debris or combustible materials.
  • Storage: Firewood, gas bottles, fuel cans and garden tools that use petrol should be kept in a separate shed or building, away from the house.
  • Emergency Survival Kit: A small emergency bag can be prepared in advance. This may contain a first-aid kit, extra chargers, cash, copies of important documents, a change of clothes, water, a flashlight torch, gloves, and a small fire extinguisher.

If a fire is close by, warn other neighbouring properties and then leave as soon as possible. In addition to this, if excessive smoke or a fire is spotted, authorities should be notified immediately.

This can be done by calling 1407 or 112 right away!
