Stinky Thursday or Tsiknopempti, as it is known locally across Cyprus, is a traditional day of celebration that is always celebrated on the Thursday before CLEAN MONDAY. This celebration also marks the beginning of the 40-day fast of the LENTEN SEASON. In light of this, the celebration allows Cypriot residents to come together and enjoy their love of food, drink, and togetherness before the fasting and penitence for LENT begins. With this in mind, Stinky Thursday or Tsiknopempti, takes place on Thursday, February 12th this year.
MARKING THE START OF CARNIVAL IN CYPRUS
Tsiknopempti also marks the start of CARNIVAL celebrations. The atmosphere, as a result, is usually lively and celebratory. Grilling meat on hot coals is a central part of the celebration, and the pungent aromas that fill the air give the holiday its name. Several tavernas and restaurants offer special menus for the occasion, and public barbecues are held in most towns and villages.
