The Mackenzie area in Larnaca received its name after a Scottish resident who established a popular restaurant and bar on the beach, following World War II. His new venture became so popular that the name became descriptive of the whole area, and the name stuck after residents began referring to the beach as Mackenzie’s beach. After several years, it eventually became the official name for the entire beach and surrounding neighbourhood.
LOW-FLYING PLANES
Mackenzie Beach, located adjacent to the Larnaca International Airport runway, is directly under the flight path of aircraft gliding smoothly overhead to land. This offers beach spectators spectacular, low-flying plane-spotting views of several aircraft that arrive in Cyprus on a daily basis.
A RANGE OF WATERSPORTS
Several active water sports providers offer jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking, and windsurfing. Mackenzie Beach also serves as a gateway to the famous Zenobia Wreck Diving Site.
A BLUE FLAG BEACH
Holding official Blue Flag status, Mackenzie Beach today guarantees pristine, high-quality, safe swimming waters. The sea, at the beach, stays shallow for up to 150 metres, so it creates an ideal, safe environment for young children and families. This beach, like many in Cyprus, offers sun beds and umbrellas for daily hire, and these are widely available along the entire kilometre beach strip.
