The Kionia Picnic Site, A mountain Retreat In Cyprus

A BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN RETREAT

The Kionia Picnic site is a beautifully organised mountain retreat located in the Machairas Forest within the Nicosia district. Standing at an altitude of 1,340 metres above sea level, it also benefits from the shade of a dense canopy of grand chestnut, pine, and cypress trees. This helps to make the retreat significantly cooler than most coastal areas during the hot summer months.

FULLY ACCESSIBLE BY CAR

Offering free parking, this scenic mountain recreation area is fully accessible by car using the winding Kapedes-Machairas Monastery winding mountain roads from either the Machairas Monastery or the nearby village of Vavatsinia.

A GOOD LEVEL OF PRIVACY

The site is equipped with designated barbecue grills, public toilets, and a natural spring that has been converted into a drinking water fountain. The site, which has wooden picnic tables and benches that are uniquely arranged across seven altitude levels on a steep slope, can accomodate up to 550 people at any one time. This also provides a good level of privacy and seclusion for individual groups.

DISCOVERING THE LOCAL NATURE TRAIL

This picnic site also serves as the starting point for the popular Kionia Profitis Ilias linear nature trail. This 7.2 km scenic hike offers stunning views of the Mesaoria plain.
