A VITAL COMPONANT OF THE ISLAND'S TOURIST INDUSTRY
Larnaca International Airport serves as one of the two primary international airports in Cyprus. It plays a pivotal role in the island’s connectivity and it is a vital componant of the island’s tourism industry. Located approximately 4 kilometres south of the City of Larnaca in the east of the island, it is the second largest airport after Paphos International Airport, which is situated in the west of the island.Â
SEVERAL PUBLIC & PRIVATE TRANSPORT OPTIONS
Larnaca’s airport is crucial to the Cypriot economy. Its role in facilitating tourism on the island has been particularly relevant in recent years. Since its opening, it has evolved significantly. It has embraced advancements in technology and infrastructure and it has maintained growth. This is mainly due to expanding global air travel demand. Several public and private transport options create easy cost-effective access to and from the airport. These include a network of taxis, shuttles, and car rental services, as well as public bus services that connect the airport to various locations across the island.Â

FROM OLD TO NEW
Originally established as a military airfield in the 1930’s, the airport faced significant challenges during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The airport found itself transformed into a hub for humanitarian aid efforts, during and after the war. In the years following the conflict, it underwent considerable upgrades and expansions. This led to the first commercial terminal opening in in 1975.Â

The island’s main civilian International Airport in Nicosia fell within the new United Nations buffer zone that still divides the island into two. This airport today remains closed and in a dilapilated state. This prompted the opening of the first commercial terminal at the airport, marking its transition from a military to a civilian airport. The Larnaca International Airport continues to operate in this way. A major reconstruction project was initiated in the 1990’s, culminating in the opening of a new airport just east of the old site in 2009.Â
GROWING PASSENGER NUMBERS
The new site of the airport features modern design elements and cutting-edge technology. This has significantly enhanced the overall travel experience for its passengers. The airport’s modern terminal building is equipped with a comprehensive terminal design that caters to over a million travellers annually. The airport also actively supports the operation of numerous airlines, connecting Cyprus to several cities all over the world. The airport offers a variety of amenities aimed at enhancing the passenger experience. It boasts a wide array of facilities designed to provide comfort and convenience to all travellers. The airport both directly and indirectly contributes to the livelihood of many local residents. Its extensive connectivity encourages a steady influx of tourists, particularly during the peak summer months. The government of Cyprus, recognising the importance of the airport to the national economy, has continued to invest in its development to accommodate growing passenger numbers.

INTERCITY BUS TO LARNACA & THEN LOCAL BUS 430
Editors Note: Private vehicles are banned from accessing the roads, which run in front of the Larnaca Airport terminals. This is due to emergency security measures that have been implemented due to the recent conflicts in the Middle East. As a result, free passenger drop off and pick up is available to the public in the short-stay parking spaces reserved for taxis at the airport’s short-stay car parks.
