A FUN & DIFFERENT WAY TO GO SIGHTSEEING!
WHAT IS A SEGWAY?
A Segway is a fun to ride self-balancing, two-wheeled upright battery powered scooter. This zero emission environmentally friendly mode of transport is very easy to ride and is probably the most efficient way to experience a city in a limited amount of time. Segways have a maximum speed of 20km per hour, so the same laws that govern bicycles apply. Segways are versatile devices and have all terrain tyres, so that they can easily negotiate footpaths, grass, or even muddy tracks.
THE SEGWAY STATION
Segway Station was set up to bring the Segway tour experience to Nicosia and the station itself is located in the heart of the old town of Nicosia on the corner of a small street lined with a coffee shop, a bar and various lovely craft shops. The Segway Station offers a relaxing café area with free Wifi that visitors can use before and after each tour. It was set up to bring the Segway experience to visitors wanting to tour the city without getting tired and it currently provides guided tours, offering people a fun way of travelling around the city. The Segway Station’s guided tours take in all of the major sites and places of interest in the city and allow participants to see parts of the old town that would usually be missed on foot. The Segway Station advocates strict rules and smoking and the use of mobile phones, whilst riding are strictly prohibited. Segways also have weight and height restrictions for riders and instructors insist on flat shoes to be worn at all times. The minimum age for a Segway tour is 14 years old and anyone under 16 years old must be accompanied by adult. All riders must weigh above 40kg and below 115kg and the minimum height for a rider is set at 140cm.
LEARNING TO RIDE
The Segway Station recommends that people arrive at least 15 minutes before any scheduled bookings. Learning to ride a Segway literally takes a few minutes to master and a professional Segway instructor prior to each tour always provides a 15-minute obligatory training and orientation session. In this orientation session, the instructors teach safe riding practices for everyone to follow and they show riders how easy it is to control the device. Segways are fun and highly manoeuvrable and riding one is easy and they simply gliding along effortlessly. Simply leaning in the intended direction steers the device and standing straight immediately stops it.
THE CITY OF NICOSIA
Nicosia is a city rich in culture and the historic capital of Cyprus is the largest largest city in on the island. Nicosia currently remains as the only divided city in the world between the illegally occupied North Cyprus and the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus in the south. The City of Nicosia has been inhabited since the Bronze Age after Arab raids on coastal towns forced inhabitants to seek safer places inland. Other groups including the Assyrians, Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Anglo-Normans, Templars, Lusignans, Venetions, Ottoman’s and the British have all left their mark on the city. Nicosia has been known over the centuries by various name and these have included the Kingdom of Ledra, Lefkothea, and Lefkosia meaning ‘White Estate’.
The City has been the administrative centre of the island since the late 12th century and there because of this, there are many administrative buildings and museums to see along the way.
SEGWAY TOURS
There is a two or three hour tour option and each one incorporates the old town part of Nicosia covering a great deal of ground in a short space of time. All routes negotiate picturesque winding streets and are designed to cover as many points of interest as possible in the allocated time, allowing riders to efficiently pack in way more sightseeing than they would on foot. The guided tours take riders past a number of local landmarks, historical sites of interest, galleries, art and craft centres and museums, as well as a myriad of local shops selling bespoke goods. As well as the important sights there is also some magnificent architecture to take in, and then there is the harrowing green line with its imposing guard towers and check points that split the city into two.
The knowledgeable Segway guide spends a few minutes at each stop, giving a brief overview of the history of the area as well as interesting insights of any particular subject before answering any questions. whilst taking individual and group photos for everybody, which are emailed to all participants the next day.
PROMOTIONAL EVENTS
Segway tours also offer their relaxing café area as a focal point for corporate team building or promotional events which is provided free of charge, along with a Segway tour for its participants.
