The Limassol Carnival

CYPRUS'S BIGGEST
STREET FESTIVAL

THE LIMASSOL CARNIVAL

Carnival celebrations take place in all the major cities and in some towns and villages around the island, but the event held in Limassol is by far the largest and most popular. Limassol’s carnival, renowned for its extravagance, is also one of the most prominant carnival events in the European carnival calendar and this year, the has the makings to be the biggest yet, with the crowd pleaser looking to be bigger than ever. The city will be staging a number daily events involving more than 150 floats over a two week period, culminating in a grand parade through the city on Sunday, March 2nd. Up to 50.000 people are expected to attend the festival’s lively street parades that will combine music, dance, food, colourful ticker tape and a huge amount of crazy string. Once again, the brightly coloured statuettes of various animals are being placed on green areas all over the city, marking this year’s carnival event, adding excitement and  anticipation of the festival which begins this month.

THE OPENING CEREMONY

Known for its lively music, colourful costumes, and energetic dancing troupes, Limassol’s  carnival this year will begin with the entrance of the Carnival King and queen of Limassol. This is marked by the ‘Tsiknopempti’ Parade, which will commence at Grigoris Afxentiou Square just by the Government Offices on Anexartisias Street. Large crowds are expected to attend along the route, which will continue through the winding streets of the old town and then circle back to  Grigoris Afxentiou Square. The city’s brass band, drummers and the mandolins of the ‘kantadoroi’ are expected to accompany carnival royalty along their route with a celebration of song and dance that will continue afterwards. A number of smaller events will also take place in Limassol’s Saripolou, Heroes and Medieval Castle squares and there are also a number of fancy dress parties being held at most of Limassol’s biggest hotels again this year. The Children’s Carnival will once again take place along Limassol’s seafront promenade.
