WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?
Pickleball is a fun, fast-paced, inclusive racket sport that was invented in Washington, United States, in 1965. As the game of choice gained traction, it soon became the official sport of Washington State. Its popularity is further boosted by the fact that it can be played both indoors or outdoors in a singles or doubles format. As a result, the game that combines elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton is now played throughout the world. Pickleball generally utilises a badminton-sized court and participants use short-handled bats to hit a perforated plastic ball over a modified tennis net.
WHERE TO PLAY PICKLEBALL IN CYPRUS
Although relatively new to Cyprus, pickleball is quickly gaining in popularity across the island. It is becoming relatively easy to play, and as a result, people of all ages and skill levels on the island are coming together to play and enjoy the game regularly. Pickleball also offers a great opportunity to not only stay active, but to meet new like-minded players of the sport. Several venues across the island now host the sport, and it is now played in several sports clubs, community centres, and recreational facilities. New clubs and groups, particularly in Limassol and Paphos, are regularly holding Pickleball tournaments and events throughout the year. These also provide the perfect opportunity to learn the game. Pickleball is also regularly played in public parks, hotels, and community centres where courts are available.
THE GREEN PADEL CLUB
Several organisations offer the opportunity to play pickleball in Cyprus. The biggest is probably the GREEN PADEL CLUB located in Limassol. Pickleball and Padel are both featured in equal measure at this club, and it offers both equipment hire and coaching at all of its facilities. The club is also actively helping to promote the sport and has expressed interest in opening several new dedicated pickleball courts across the island.
