A VITAL LINK TO TOURISM
Nestled on the south-western coast of Cyprus, Paphos International Airport is a vital link between the island and the rest of the world. The airport’s inception in 1983 proved crucial for Cyprus’s tourism industry to the west of the island. At the time, the airport initially served as a smaller alternative to the well-established Larnaca International Airport in the east of the island. It started with limited flights and destinations. The airport gradually expanded as international tourism grew, undergoing significant upgrades to meet increasing passenger demand during the 1990’s and by the early 2000’s, it had firmly established itself as a central hub for both international arrivals and departures on the island.Â
SERVING THE WESTERN PART OF THE ISLAND
The Paphos International Airport is considered by some to be more than just a transit point of entry and avidly plays an important cultural role when bringing together diverse groups of people from across the globe. In some ways, the airport symbolises Cypriot cultural exchange, as well as the infamous friendly hospitality Greek Cypriots have become known for.Â
Some view the airport as a symbolic entry point for the culturally rich and historically significant region of Paphos, well known for several of its UNESCO World Heritage and archaeological sites. These include secluded coastlines, the old city of Paphos itself, the Tombs of the Kings, and the Villa of Dionysus.
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF SIMPLICITY
Paphos International Airport is an advocate for easy and simple travel, comprising just one terminal for arrivals and another for departures. The modern open space layout of the airport is straightforward, enhancing passenger flow and accessibility, whilst offering a range of facilities aimed at both leisure and business travellers. These facilities include various shops and duty-free outlets offering an extensive range of goods from perfumes and cosmetics to local crafts, beverages, and snacks. There is a large lounge area where passengers can relax before their flights and a dedicated smoking zone accompanied by a well-stocked bar.Â
AMENITIES & FACILITIES
The airport boasts a modern facility that plays an integral role in the tourism and transportation sectors of Cyprus. Catering to millions of passengers annually, the airport continues to serve travellers of both leisure and business by supplying direct connections to several European cities. The airport features real-time flight information using digital screens, and recognises the needs of business travellers, offering lounges that provide comfortable seating, private workspaces, and complimentary quality Wi-Fi. These lounges offer a quieter space away from the hustle and bustle of the main terminal and can be easily booked on arrival. The airport also amicably caters for passengers with reduced mobility and facilities include wheelchair accessibility, assistance services, and designated blue badge parking areas close to the terminals.
TRANSPORT OPTIONS
There is a dedicated area for car rental services featuring major international and local car hire companies. This makes it convenient for travellers to hire a car as soon as they arrive. There is also a designated 24-hour taxi service available directly outside the main terminal building. Although taxis provide a quick means of transport to nearby hotels and attractions, additionally there are private shuttle services, as well as local public buses that operate regularly facilitating economic group travel.
FUTURE EXPANSION PLANS
Paphos International Airport has witnessed significant growth not only in passenger numbers but also in the breadth of services it provides and it has managed to establish itself as a significant contributor to Cyprus’s economy by handling over 4 million passengers annually. As the airport grows, it has actively pursued initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and the airport management has implemented measures to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, and promote the use of renewable energy sources where possible. These efforts are part of a broader trend across the aviation industry, as airports worldwide work to minimise their environmental impact.Â
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
The airport’s management has always been keen to open up Cyprus to more travellers and increased flight connectivity has remained its priority in recent years. The airport’s management has also constantly sought to expand its flight destinations by attracting more airlines from different countries further stimulating the island’s economy. Future expansion plans are said to include the expansion of both terminals, to cope with increased passenger numbers, and an upgrade of air traffic control systems and improved runway facilities. These developments aim to ensure that Paphos International Airport can remain competitive with other regional airports while continuing to provide excellent service to travellers.
A CRUCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONENT
Paphos International Airport has evolved significantly since its inception in 1983 and has become a crucial infrastructure component supporting Cyprus’s tourism industry. With its modern facilities and a commitment to sustainability, the airport has a bright future ahead. As millions of travellers pass through its gates every year, the airport not only serves the practical purpose of air travel but also enhances the cultural tapestry of the island, bridging both its rich history with the island’s new modern dynamic presence. As developments unfold, Paphos International Airport is poised to remain a vital gateway for exploration and adventure on this enchanting Mediterranean island.

Editors Note: Private vehicles are banned from accessing the roads, which run in front of the Paphos Airport terminals. This is due to emergency security measures that have been implemented due to the recent conflicts in the Middle East. As a result, free passenger drop off and pick up is available to the public in the short-stay parking spaces reserved for taxis at the airport’s short-stay car parks.
