A POPULAR CULTURAL EVENT

The Kataklysmos Festival is also known as the Pentecost Festival of the Flood. In Cyprus, it is a time for local communities to come together, participate in various festivities, and celebrate in a truly Cypriot fashion. With this in mind, this popular cultural event is celebrated throughout Cyprus on the day of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. This occurrs on the 50th day after Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday. The festival, which features a wide range of activities and entertainment for people of all ages opens on this day and typically continues for up to 6 days.  

A LARGE-SCALE EVENT IN LARNACA

The largest of these celebrations usually occurrs in the City of Larnaca, which have evolved into a large-scale event. Attracting visitors from all over the world, the festival here consists of a series of various events and shows that are held in several locations across the Finikoudes Promenade. This vibrant setting here often creates an atmosphere that permeates the whole city during the festival. After opening with an inaugural firework display, the promenade then hosts a program of different activities and varied forms of entertainment that all start during the day and continue through to the evenings. Several children’s activities, including theatrical performances and children’s shows, boat races, song contests, craft workshops, and sporting competitions take place during the day. Live music concerts, modern and traditional dance, and magic shows usually continue into the evening. Several famous Greek singers also headline the event every evening.

As well as its religious significance, the festival also acts as a celebration of the island nation’s affiliation with the sea and symbolises a new beginning and regeneration. SPORTING EVENTS

Amateur sporting events also take place during the day, with local teams taking part in several different sporting competitions such as beach volleyball. Competitions for mind sports such as chess also take place and there are usually several swimming contests. 

CRAFT MAKING

The festival also features cultural exhibitions that include several workshops. These workshops detail the creation of traditional Cypriot crafts and feature examples of woodcarving, including traditional flute and rosary making and weaving, including traditional yarn winding, and straw crafting, and basket weaving. Crafts created by traditional blacksmiths and pottery works also usually feature. Another popular outlet is the distillation workshop, which takes visitors through the distillation process of Cyprus Zivania.

LIVE MUSIC & DANCING

A full and varied program of live music concerts takes place every evening. These include performances by musicians and singers from both Greece and Cyprus. Traditional Cypriot folk music accompanied by traditional dances are also performed on most evenings by local dance schools. 

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

Various workshops for children of all ages are also available and these include pumpkin decoration as well as several arts and crafts. Other events include children’s theatre, magic and puppet shows and several light-hearted competitions take place daily.

TRADITIONAL BOAT RACES

One of the main highlights of the event is the traditional boat races that take place on the Larnaca seafront during the day. They include sailing, offshore, and kayak racing and have been a part of the festival for many years, creating a thrilling spectacle to watch.
