A POPULAR CULTURAL EVENT
Although there are several festivals and events held across Cyprus throughout the year, this annual spring festival is one of the biggest and most attended. With many different names and descriptions, this festival celebrates island life and the sea. Cypriots generally refer to it as ‘Kataklysmos’, which translates to cataclysms or flood. It is also known as Pentecost, or the Festival of the Flood. Either way, it is rigorously celebrated throughout Cyprus 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday. This is when it is said that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles.
A LARGE-SCALE EVENT IN LARNACA
Typically continuing for up to 6 days throughout Cyprus, the Kataklysmos or Pentecost, festival of the flood, is a popular cultural event that enables local communities to come together, participate in various festivities, and celebrate in a truly Cypriot fashion. The events often feature a wide range of activities and entertainment for people of all ages. The largest celebrations are held in Larnaca, where the Kataklysmos festival has evolved into a large-scale event, attracting visitors from all over the world. Held at various locations along its ‘Finikoudes’ Promenade, the festival here comprises a series of events and shows that run from day to night. This vibrant setting often creates an atmosphere that permeates the whole city during the festival.
AN INAUGURAL FIREWORK DISPLAY
After opening with an inaugural firework display, it then hosts a program of activities and entertainment. Several children’s activities, including theatrical performances and children’s shows, boat races, song contests, craft workshops, and sporting competitions, take place during the day. Both modern and traditional dance, along with several variety acts, such as magic shows, usually follow. These all lead up to the headline main event that usually consists of live music concerts, hosted by famous Greek singers.
ROOTS IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY
The history of the Kataklysmos Festival dates back to ancient times, and as well as its Christian religious significance, it also has roots in Greek mythology. With this in mind, the festival has become a beloved cultural event that celebrates the spirit of renewal along with the island’s rich traditions. The festival does this by focusing on the island nation’s affiliation with the sea and its relevance to the lives of the ordinary people of Cyprus. Often symbolised by a cleansing through the purity of water and the continual cycle of regeneration that it represents, the event offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Cypriot culture first-hand. SEVERAL SPORTING EVENTS
Several amateur sporting events often take place each day. This sees several local sporting teams take part in several different sporting competitions. These include sports such as beach volleyball and swimming. Mind sports such as chess also feature and they are open to all participants.
CRAFT MAKING
The festival also features cultural exhibitions that include several workshops. These workshops detail the creation of traditional Cypriot crafts and feature examples of woodcarving. These include the creation of traditional flutes and religious rosaries. Weaving is also usually featured, and examples of traditional yarn winding, straw crafting, and basket weaving often take place daily. Crafts created by traditional blacksmiths and pottery works are also usually featured. The distillation workshop usually takes visitors through the distillation process of the infamous CYPRUS ZIVANIA.
LIVE MUSIC & DANCING
A full and varied program of live music concerts takes place every evening. These include performances by musicians and singers from both Greece and Cyprus. Traditional Cypriot folk music accompanied by traditional dances are also performed on most evenings by local dance schools.
CHILDREN'S ACTVITIES
Various workshops for children of all ages are also available. These include pumpkin decoration as well as several arts and crafts. Other events include children’s theatre, magic and puppet shows. Several light-hearted competitions for children also take place daily.
TRADITIONAL BOAT RACES
One of the main highlights of the event is the traditional boat races. These take place on the Larnaca seafront daily. They include sailing, offshore, and kayak racing. Boat races have been a part of the festival for several years, creating a thrilling spectacle to watch from the shore.
CRAFT & FOOD STALLS
Several stalls selling traditional Cypriot crafts and delicacies line the seafront promenade. These allow visitors to browse through local crafts and handmade goods. They also have the opportunity to sample delicious food or delicacies at their leisure.
