The scenic coastal area, known as Governor’s Beach, is a Blue Flag-designated beach, located in the Limassol district, near the village of Pentakomo. It was widely known as Kalymnos Beach before the British colonial era, after sponge divers from the Greek island of Kalymnos regularly travelled to this specific shoreline to harvest sea sponges that are still abundant in the area today.

Things then changed when Cyprus came under the control of the British in the late 19th century. This is when the area’s recreational beach became very popular amongst the island’s British elite. It is said that several British colonial officials and their families would often congregate at the coastal retreat because of the striking white chalk cliffs that surround the area. This is said to have reminded the homesick British expatriates of the famous white cliffs of Dover.

The beach and its surrounding area eventually gained its name after a British colonial governor built a holiday home close to the beach and then frequently used it for his personal recreation and swimming. Following Cyprus’s independence from British rule, the former governor’s holiday residence was transferred to the authority of the Republic of Cyprus. The colloquial name of Governor’s Beach, however, remains its official designation today.

Still famous for its steep white chalk and limestone cliffs that sharply contrast with its dark volcanic sands, Governor’s Beach today is popular for its calm-water swimming, snorkelling, coastal walking trails, and camping at the nearby Governor’s Camping site. The 2-kilometre continuous stretch of shoreline is split into multiple small bays and hidden coves, including a semi-official naturist area. Traditional fish tavernas, restaurants, and beach bars sit directly above or beside each bay and equipped sections feature sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets, and seasonal lifeguards.
