A PUBLIC HOLIDAY
The Beginning of the 40-Day Lenten Fast
Clean Monday falls on February 23rd this year and this marks the first day of the 40-day LENTEN FAST, which is observed by Greek Orthodox Christians. This fast represents the purification of the body during the run-up to ORTHODOX EASTER. Clean Monday occurs the day after Forgiveness Sunday, which is the Sunday before the beginning of LENT, and always falls 7 weeks before GREEK ORTHODOX EASTER. The term ‘Clean’ refers to the spiritual cleansing of the soul and body before the LENTEN strictures begin. Common observances include fasting from meat, dairy, and alcohol. Bright, fresh, and wholesome simple foods that symbolise purification are encouraged during this period. These often include fresh fish, vegetables, salads and fruits.
Celebrating the Start of Spring
Clean Monday has roots that are set in ancient rituals that often celebrated the arrival of spring. Today, the celebration often incorporates symbols of new life, which ultimately symbolise a time of regeneration and renewal. Also known for its spiritual significance and cultural traditions across Cyprus, several symbolic gestures are observed on this day. These include kite flying, the cleansing of homes, and the purification of the body. Clean Monday also symbolises renewal in preparation for the rest of the year.
Traditions & Religious Customs
As a significant day in the Greek Orthodox calendar, Clean Monday is marked with a series of religious observances by the Greek Orthodox Church. These services represent several Christian religious teachings that emphasise Christian values that include forgiveness, confession, reflection, and repentance. As a result, several services are held in churches throughout the island on this public holiday.
