GREEK MYTHOLOGY

The remote location of the rock, overlooking the waters of the Mediterranean, adds to its allure. Its picturesque landscape, set against rugged cliffs and serene sea, creates a harmonious, tranquil setting that usually captures the hearts of all who visit. Local mythology attests that the rock is the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. Legend has it that she rose from the foamy waters surrounding the rock. This has helped to turn the site into a symbol of love and beauty. Romantics looking to experience the enchanting aura of the goddess of love have visited the site ever since. As well as this, people also visit the rock to explore its historical significance or to soak up its natural beauty, but most still visit to seek blessings from the goddess of love at her birthplace.

A HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

As well as its mythological and natural beauty, the rock also holds some historical significance. The rock has witnessed the rise and fall of many civilisations that have graced the island, as well as the ebb and flow of significant ancient trade routes that used the rock as a landmark. Several early seafarers, navigating the coast of Paphos, used the rock to mark their position. The rock also allowed for invading forces, including pirates, to land unopposed and then attack the surrounding area.

A SUNSET REMEMBERED

It is fair to say that there is a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of the place at dusk. As the sun sets or rises over the rock, it often casts a golden glow over the whole area, and the orange and red rays of the sun setting behind the rock often cast a warm glow creating a stunning landscape. The rock at sunset is truly staggering and it creates a magical and unforgettable experience for all. The tranquil waters lapping against the cliffs, the gentle sea breeze, as well as the breathtaking views all come together to create an exhilerating experience. This makes it a favoured location for photographers and artists seeking to capture its natural beauty.
