FOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS FOR CYPRUS
The Republic of Cyprus addresses food waste through a combination of community redistribution initiatives, European Union-backed digital platforms, and several national environmental campaigns. Whilst the main goal of these initiatives is to help families in need, they also actively support environmental sustainability.
REDISTRIBUTION INITIATIVES & ENVIRONMENTAL SCHEMES
In light of this, several Cypriot organisations support primary food waste programmes at the grassroots level. They do this by collecting excess food, mainly from food businesses, and then redistributing it to people in need daily from designated distribution centres. The businesses involved include several restaurants, hotels, cafés, supermarkets and bakeries.
Zero Food Waste Cyprus (ZFWC): This bicommunal, volunteer-led grassroots group targets waste at open-air markets. Volunteers collect unsold fruits and vegetables from vendors, and then edible surplus is sorted and distributed to local refugees and vulnerable populations.
Food Cyprus: Run by the AKTI PROJECT AND RESEARCH CENTRE, this national initiative focuses on raising consumer awareness, conducting educational workshops at local universities, and teaching school children how to reduce household food waste.
The FoodConnect Platform: Originally launched as a pilot program under the LIFE – FOODPRINT PROJECT, this digital tool actively bridges the gap between food donors and charity organisations. Local businesses, hotels, and supermarkets upload surplus food that charities and social grocery stores can claim before it expires. Backed by Friends of the Earth Cyprus and the Ministry of Agriculture, it has transitioned into a dedicated mobile application.
LIFE-IP CYzero WASTE: This massive, long-term strategic European Union initiative is part of a larger national project that aims to reduce food waste. Covering multiple regions in Cyprus, it is coordinated by the DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT by promoting a circular economy across the island through smart monitoring of municipal organic waste sorting across the island. This initiative also helps municipalities scale up their organic waste segregation, ensuring that unavoidable kitchen and restaurant food scraps are separated for industrial composting rather than ending up in landfills. As well as supporting environmental sustainability, this initiative also acts as a social welfare programme that supplies fresh food daily for people who are facing economic difficulties.
School Biofuel Scheme: An indirect branch of culinary waste management integrated into the Cyprus national school curriculum. Orchestrated by the MINISTRY OF EDUCATION and local NGOs, over 80,000 students bring used domestic cooking oil to school. This oil is then collected, refined, and sold internationally as biofuel. The financial returns are given directly back to the participating schools to fund student-led green infrastructure projects.
