THE SAFE USE OF FREE-STANDING HEATERS IN CYPRUS
BEWARE!
Due to the lack of central heating across the island, several people tend to use free-standing electric or gas heaters. These, whilst effective, can be dangerous if used incorrectly or without care!
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS
Here are a few basic guidelines to follow for the safe use of free-standing heaters
- Do not cover free-standing heaters and keep them at least 1 metre away from anything flammable.
- Place all free-standing heaters on a flat, stable surface, and make sure that they have a good, sturdy base to prevent tipping.
- Never leave free-standing heaters unattended, especially around children or pets, and keep doors and traffic clear around the unit to avoid any bumps.
- Ensure that free-standing heaters are placed in a well-ventilated area.
- Avoid placing heaters on carpets or rugs.
- Extension sockets should be avoided and all electric free-standing heaters should be plugged directly into a grounded wall outlet.
- Electric free-standing heaters should be turned off and unplugged when not in use.
- Free-standing heaters with an automatic shut-off are recommended for safety.
- Regularly inspect heaters for damage, loose cords, or signs of wear.
- Clean dust and debris from grills and vents, and ensure that all guards are in place.
- Do not block the heater’s air intake or outlet.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operation and shut-off procedures.
- For kerosene and propane units, keep flame visible and DO NOT burn unapproved fuels.
