THE SAFE USE OF FREE-STANDING HEATERS IN CYPRUS

BEWARE!

Due to the lack of central heating across the island, several people tend to use free-standing electric or gas heaters. These, whilst effective, can be dangerous if used incorrectly or without care!

GENERAL SAFETY TIPS

Here are a few basic guidelines to follow for the safe use of free-standing heaters
  1. Do not cover free-standing heaters and keep them at least 1 metre away from anything flammable.
  2. Place all free-standing heaters on a flat, stable surface, and make sure that they have a good, sturdy base to prevent tipping.
  3. Never leave free-standing heaters unattended, especially around children or pets, and keep doors and traffic clear around the unit to avoid any bumps.
  4. Ensure that free-standing heaters are placed in a well-ventilated area.
  5. Avoid placing heaters on carpets or rugs.
  6. Extension sockets should be avoided and all electric free-standing heaters should be plugged directly into a grounded wall outlet.
  7. Electric free-standing heaters should be turned off and unplugged when not in use.
  8. Free-standing heaters with an automatic shut-off are recommended for safety.
  9. Regularly inspect heaters for damage, loose cords, or signs of wear.
  10. Clean dust and debris from grills and vents, and ensure that all guards are in place.
  11. Do not block the heater’s air intake or outlet.
  12. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operation and shut-off procedures.
  13. For kerosene and propane units, keep flame visible and DO NOT burn unapproved fuels.
