ROAD TAX 2026
RENEWALS MUST BE COMPLETED FROM JANUARY TO MARCH
The new year in Cyprus marks the beginning of the road tax renewal period, and Vehicle owners have the option to renew road tax for three, six, nine or twelve months. All vehicle owners also have the option to pay their annual road tax in several ways during this time. The window for non-penalty renewals opens from the end of the first week of January and runs all the way until mid-March.
The prerequisite documents for renewals, as always, are a valid insurance certificate and a valid MOT certificate. The vehicle owner’s unique reference number is also required, and this can be found under the ‘owner’ section of the vehicle registration document. The insurance certificate number may also be required, as it sometimes takes some time to register the policy in the national database.
Renewals completed before the March deadline do not incur any penalties. However, any renewals after this are subject to extra charges. If the payment window closes, owners of vehicles who have not renewed their road tax or declared their vehicle off-road will have to pay an additional €10 fee. Further penalties are applied if the road tax remains unpaid for the duration of a full year. These may include an additional 10% of the annual road tax levy.
RENEWAL OPTIONS
THE ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT
To renew or purchase road tax at a district office of the ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT, a completed TOM 8 application form and the cash for the sum required are needed. The pre-requisite documents are also required. The ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT also accepts online payments. The ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT also accepts applications to declare a vehicle off road.
DISTRICT POST OFFICES & CITIZENS SERVICE CENTRES
Cash for the sum required as well as the pre-requisite documents are needed in order to renew or purchase road tax at a district POST OFFICE or CITIZENS SERVICE CENTRES. Both organisations also accept applications to declare a vehicle off road.
OFF-ROAD DECLARATIONS
An owner can declare a vehicle off-road for a specific time or indefinitely. Owners that supply a bank IBAN will receive a road tax rebate directly into their nominated bank account. To declare a vehicle off-road, a completed TOM 12 form is required, along with the vehicle registration document. An off-road location for the vehicle will have to be nominated so that if necessary, the vehicle can be inspected. If the vehicle has been disposed of then the owner must notify the ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT in writing and supply a certificate of disposal.
PAYMENT OPTIONS
PAYING IN INSTALLMENTS
Paying in monthly instalments is possible, but an application to pay this way must be submitted in advance to the district offices of the ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT. Tri-monthly instalments are standard, so paying this way is more straight forward. This does not require any advance applications.
CASH OR ONLINE PAYMENTS
Road tax can be paid by cash at the ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT. The CITIZENS SERVICE CENTRES and the DISTRICT POST OFFICES also accept cash payments for road tax. Online payments can be processed by the ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT or by using JCC SMART.
JCC ONLINE PAYMENTS
JCC SMART requires all users to register for their service. An email address and a password will be required for this. Once registered, users of this service will be able to make other online payments as well as renew or purchase road tax. A credit card, along with the prerequisite documents, will be required. JCC SMART does not accept applications to declare a vehicle off-road.
THE EASIEST WAY TO RENEW ROAD TAX
ROAD TAX REMINDER
Although vehicle owners have until March 12th to pay for their road tax, authorities are advising them to complete the renewal process as early as possible. They are doing this to avoid potential system overloads in the final days.
Vehicle owners are also being encouraged to update their contact details within the TOM registry. This will enable them to receive important notifications, such as vehicle recalls. Vehicles without road tax and that are not declared as immobilised will be removed from the Tom registry.
Those who do not plan to renew their licence must formally notify the TOM of their vehicle’s immobilisation. For vehicles that have been destroyed, owners must submit a cancellation request along with a “certificate of destruction” issued by licensed waste processing facilities. This ensures exemption from road tax payments from the date of destruction.
The fastest and easiest way to renew road tax is by using the ROAD TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT’S online portal. Failure to do so will result in continued liability for road tax payments.
Traffic police are warning that they will start issuing fines of up to €150 for unpaid road tax after the March 12th deadline. Late payments will also incur a €10 penalty plus 10% of the selected tax period’s cost.
