Tsiknopempti, also known as ‘Stinky Thursday’, is a traditional day of celebration in Cyprus. It is always celebrated on the Thursday before CLEAN MONDAY, and also marks the beginning of the 40-day fast of the LENTEN SEASON. Tsiknopempti, which this year takes place on Thursday, February 12th, is a time for Cypriots to come together and enjoy their love of food, drink, and togetherness before the fasting and penitence for LENT begins.
MARKING THE START OF CARNIVAL IN CYPRUS
Tsiknopempti also marks the start of CARNIVAL celebrations. The atmosphere, as a result, is usually lively and celebratory. Grilling meat on hot coals is a central part of the celebration, and the pungent aromas fill the air, giving the holiday its name. Many tavernas and restaurants offer special menus for the occasion, and public barbecues are held in most towns and villages.
