Extreme Heat & Public Air-Condition Facilities In Cyprus

ALEVIATING AN EXTREME HEAT PROBLEM

Every summer, Cyprus experiences intense heatwaves. Inland temperatures often reach over 40°, and coastal areas often feel hotter due to high humidity. Municipalities constantly monitor these weather patterns and then open public air-conditioned spaces as and when needed. They do this across the island to help alleviate the extreme heat problem.

AVAILABLE AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS THE ISLAND

These facilities aim to protect the public, especially vulnerable groups, from heat-related illnesses. They aim to help Cypriot residents stay safe during the summer months, as well as those who wish to avoid high energy bills. Recipients of these centres can cool down, hydrate, and escape the extreme heat at various locations across the island.

GOOD GENERAL ADVICE

Municipalities across the island are also offering advice and caution with regard to extreme heat exposure. They are continually urging the public to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and they are also advising all people to stay indoors during peak hours. They are also stating that everybody should stay hydrated at all times and use the necessary skin products when exposed to the sun.

Air-conditioned public spaces are open in the following locations

Limassol: Cooling centres are open at the ‘Adult Activity Centre’ on weekdays and at the ‘Ploutis Servas Municipal Buildings’ on weekends when extreme hot weather occurs.

Nicosia: ‘Heatwave Assistance Centres’, are opened in two central locations of the city. The village centres of Latsia and Yeri also open cooling halls when extreme hot weather occurs.

Larnaca: A daily cooling space at ‘Chrysostomeio Melathron’ is opened when extreme hot weather occurs. Lefkara municipality also usually operates air-conditioned halls across all seven of its municipal divisions.
