EDUCATING CYPRUS
A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE GREEK CYPRIOT EDUCATION SYSTEM
Compulsory Attendance: The education system in Cyprus is centrally managed by the MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, SPORT & YOUTH. Public education is free and compulsory from the ages of 5 to 15. Children are usually separated by age into primary schools, also known as gymnasiums, and then lower secondary schools, also known as Lyceums. Technical schools, which focus on promoting general education and providing equality of opportunity for all students, usually form the rest of the secondary educational route. The curriculum that they follow is built on core academic subjects. Higher education is offered in public and private institutions, which both operate at the university level. These are also known as Panepistimia.
Special Needs: Special educational needs is provided within mainstream schooling.
Public and Private: Private schools and universities operate alongside the public system, but charge fees for tuition.
Language of Instruction: Greek is the primary language used in public schools, while private schools often use English as their primary language.
